SCOT-VENT CELEBRATES 50 YEARS OF SOLID GOLD SERVICE

This year, Scot-Vent Ltd marks a golden milestone - 50 years in business. The company has been based at Hillington Park since the very beginning and has grown into one of Scotland’s most experienced and respected names in ventilation engineering. We caught up with director Robert Colvin to reflect on Scot-Vent’s journey, how the business has evolved, and what the future holds.

How would you describe what Scot-Vent does?

We’re a small but highly skilled team of ventilation engineers, specialist sheet metal workers, and installation professionals. We provide clients with a full service which means from design and manufacture through to the installation and commissioning of ventilation and odour control systems. Everything we do is carried out in-house and accredited by the relevant industry bodies. Whether it’s for a school, a commercial kitchen, or an industrial site, we deliver reliable, engineered ventilation solutions tailored to each project.

How have things changed since you started in 1975?

In terms of our core operations, surprisingly little has changed. We still rely on traditional, time-tested techniques and tools to create high-quality ductwork and systems. Where the real evolution has come is how we run the business.  We’ve improved efficiency, expanded our client base, and embraced the standards and certifications that modern projects demand. But our hands-on approach and craftsmanship remain just as important today as they were in 1975.

What industries do you typically work with?

Our experience spans many sectors. We’ve designed and installed ventilation systems for schools, swimming pools, commercial kitchens, odour control plants, and woodchip extraction facilities. We also work on highly specialised ATEX-rated systems for hazardous environments. With 50 years under our belt, we’ve seen and solved a wide range of ventilation challenges.

Where are your customers based?

We’re very much a Scotland-wide business. Our clients are based all over the country including the Highlands and Islands and we’re used to working in remote or logistically challenging locations. Our Hillington Park base gives us great access to major transport routes, which helps us manage projects wherever they are.

What are some of the most high-profile or memorable projects you’ve worked on?

Our work in The Falkland Islands stands out as a real highlight. We delivered a range of ventilation systems there for both the Government and the Military. These projects included both process facilities and recreational spaces for personnel. It was a unique and rewarding challenge, and something we’re very proud to have been part of.

How has the team grown over time?

Back in 1975, we had five employees. Today, we have nine. We’ve deliberately kept the team small and specialised, which allows us to maintain high standards and close collaboration across every job. Our people are highly experienced, and many have been with us for years and that continuity is a big part of our success.

What’s been the biggest highlight for the company over the past 50 years?

Quite simply reaching 50 years. Staying in business that long, especially in a technical and competitive field like ours, is something we’re incredibly proud of. It’s a testament to the hard work of our team, the loyalty of our clients, and the consistent quality of our work.

How has Hillington Park changed since you first arrived?

The estate has gone through a lot of positive changes. In recent years, there’s been significant investment and modernisation, which has attracted a broader mix of businesses. It feels busier, more productive, and more vibrant than ever. It’s a good place to be part of.

Why did you choose Hillington Park originally — and what’s kept you there for 50 years?

At the time, we needed larger premises with space for our equipment, easier access for commercial vehicles, and better options for deliveries. The estate has continued to provide the practical benefits we need to run the business efficiently.

Looking ahead, what’s next for Scot-Vent?

We’re focused on continuing to do what we do best which is delivering high-quality, specialist ventilation systems. As demand for energy-efficient, tailored solutions grows, we’re well-positioned to provide that service. Our goal is to keep building on what we’ve achieved and ensure Scot-Vent remains strong for years to come.

Congratulations to Robert and the rest of the Scot-Vent team on fifty successful years and all the best for the next fifty!
