Like nothing that
went before.

From Harley Davidsons to Penguin biscuits, life-saving equipment to life-giving whisky, Hillington has played a major role in shaping Scotland’s economy for over 80 years. Let’s take a quick tour through our storied history.
1938

A royal opening

King George VI and Queen Elizabeth formally open the estate on the 3rd of May, 1938.

1939–45

Europe at war

As WW2 looms, the government builds a large factory at Hillington for Rolls Royce to manufacture aero engines. By 1943, the plant is producing 400 engines a week – playing a huge role in the Allied victory.

The Rolls Royce Merlin V-12 engine powered many aircraft, including the Spitfire, Hurricane, Mosquito, and Lancaster.

Fergie Time

Long before he became the most successful British manager of all time, Sir Alex Ferguson worked at the Remington factory as an apprentice toolmaker in the 1960s. It was here that he met his wife, Cathy.

The first Penguin biscuit is created at William Macdonald’s Hillington factory. By 1965, Macdonald & Sons are responsible for almost 20% of all British chocolate biscuit exports.
