MEET THE MAN BEHIND THE BUZZ

Meik’s journey into beekeeping began a decade ago and he’s never looked back. “I’d always loved wildlife, and when I got a job working for a beekeeping business I was hooked and it has grown into a real passion.  The company I work with now, Webster Honey, look after lots of hives across Scotland and those hives are home to over 3 million honeybees!”

He spends much of his time checking the health of the colonies, monitoring honey production, and keeping an eye on swarm control and prevention. “It’s more hands-on than people might think and they need a lot of care. Bees are incredibly organised and each hive has a queen, worker bees, and drones, all with specific jobs.”

And some of those jobs are pretty impressive. Did you know bees can fly up to 15 miles per hour and visit over 5,000 flowers in a single day? They even do a little waggle dance to tell each other where to find the best pollen.

Meik is hosting a free bee workshop on 14th August for anyone working on the estate who’d like to get a closer look at the hives, meet the bees, and answer all their bee-related questions.
